Occupational therapist role in children with Autism
Here, I do not feel that there is a need to define the Autism as it has become common word that is searched on google, however, I afraid to say that most people or parents can easily define it in their own words in some way or the other. Though, I am trying to define it in my words that the “autism spectrum disorder” (ASD) is a complex, lifelong neurodevelopmental condition characterized by a “blend” of challenges or difficulties in social communication, interaction, and behavior and why we call it spectrum because it presents with vast differences in severity, developmental impact, and individual abilities. Often parents confuse it with others neurodevelopmental conditions for instance with ADHD though while google it anyone can somehow read about the difference though I am not sure about usefulness, however research says, ASD children rarely interact and communicate with others and may display unique motor or verbal behaviors in comparison to children with ADHD, who are usually distracted, pay little attention and have difficulty sustaining mental efforts. ASD has many similarities to ADHD, but there are also differences between the two. Both disorders are considered neurodevelopment disorders; however, their diagnosis can be at different ages. ASD for example is usually diagnosed at earlier ages before even the child is three years old, while ADHD diagnosis is not confirmed until the child is older. ASD and ADHD are neurobiological disorders that manifest neuropsychological deficits similarly. These two disorders have also been linked genetically and environmentally, such as preterm delivery. Why O.T I often have to answer this questions to parents and some times to other professionals why Occupational therapist required, what my 20 years of experience says that the Occupational therapist help child to develop essential daily living skills, improve sensory integration, enhance motor coordination, better social and emotional regulation.
